Little Village

After hearing Boyd talk of his meal at Gino's last week, I told Chris that I wanted to go there for dinner. He and I have been there several times for wine and or drinks, but he has never eaten there. Chris, a lover of all things Italian, I thought would really enjoy it. Yesterday I began thinking it may be nice if we had dinner somewhere downtown so we could walk for our date (rare we get to have dates these days). When he asked last night if I was still wanting to go to Gino's, I took the opportunity to suggest we go to one of the two Italian places downtown since the weather has been nice and we could walk. He said, "I was thinking the same thing". Little Village was agreed upon. He made our reservations sparing enough time for me to squeeze in a trip to the gym prior to (thank goodness). I hurry home after to shower, finish a load of laundry and get ready. We rush out of the door and walk very quickly, too quickly in the wooden soled shoes I chose to wear last night, to Little Village. Erik, Chris, Sheridan and I would sometimes order takeout from Little Village when we all worked together at Avoyelles. I had only had salads or apps from there while Chris had tried a few entrees. We order a bottle of wine to share and skim the menu. I decided I would have a large salad with shrimp and Chris is disappointed in my decision. When the waitress returns to serve our wine, she tells us the night's specials. The last one she tells us, I decide is for me!. Peppercorn crusted rare seared tuna, set over a bed of spinach, and topped with a wasabi aioli. He is pleased that I change my mind. I don't know why a salad would not have been ok. I was having deja vu from the night before when dining with the parents and they too were upset with my dinner choice. Chris makes a very sweet toast, we sip our wine and chat about our day and what may be going on that the other doesn't yet know about. When our entrees arrive, I notice a significant amount of wasabi aioli drizzled over the sliced tuna. I think it looks like a lot, ask Chris, he agrees. I decide to taste. It was waaaaaaaaaay too much wasabi. The last thing I want to do is complain about a meal Chris has made such an effort to provide. I ask him to taste mine. Wasabi has the habit of hitting you after a second. I watch him chew and he makes a face moments later. He says "that about knocked me out of my chair". The fish was amazing. I scrape a good bit of the aioli off and continue to eat. The waitress approaches and notices. I tell her it is a bit strong but do not want to send it back (I know the guy who runs their kitchen and don't want to complain). After eating a salad and piece of bread, I do not have much room for the tuna anyway. When closing our dinner check she tells us she had the kitchen taste the aioli and they agreed it was too strong. Tuna stayed on ticket anyway! We close and leave. Walked over to Red Star to have one drink with Collin and Lars (there is that name you love, Natalie). Walk back to the house, drink in hand. It was very nice out last night, so the walk was very enjoyable. Once home, we pop in season one, episode one of Sex and the City (thanks Chris!). I didn't think we (or I) looked happy enough in the picture taken in the restaurant so Chris took another picture once we were home!

Let Them Eat Cake!

My parents took Chris and I for an early birthday dinner last night. Restaurant of my choice. I choose Chelsea's. I think it was a bit more casual than my mother intended, but she gave in to my request. Dinner was lovely and conversation great. I don't feel like I see them enough lately, so it was nice to catch up with the two of them. We were able to eat on the patio since the weather was a bit cooler than normal. My dad spilled a huge cup of iced tea into my purse. Sheridan, Natalie, Finicky and my dad need to get together and go bowling. Thank goodness my birthday gift from my parents was a new purse! I was worried about my camera because it was in the purse, but all is ok so I have dinner pictures to share.
Oh, the waiter surprised me with a cake. A lot of my red star friends were working at chelsea's last night so i left behind three boxes of bday cake for them to share. Kerry, Emily and Kelly seemed pumped about getting cake!

Sheridan Michelle Fay!

Sheridan recently mentioned she felt a little left out of my life. Today's post is devoted to all things Miss Fay! She showed up about half hour late to my house for our commute to Sunday Funday. Once we got over that little hurdle, fun was had by all (except for the sudden rainstorm). It was at least three hours before spilling anything on herself, way to go Sher! Photos for the blog world...

I love me some Sheridan Fay!

Oh, the first picture she is making sad face because she dropped food on her dress. Can't really see the stain in the photo.

Friends

I was a little tired last night and content with staying in but caved to the pressures from Natalie and Collin. Heidi and her sister met us. Chris (off at 10:30) was called out to an accident scene at 10:26 so was rather late meeting up with us. I was tired and kinda cranky (hope it didn't show) and felt like I was a total bore UNTIL I was asked by Collin to casually get up and walk away from the booth so I could see someone. While pretending to walk with a mission of not looking at this person, I notice a guy looking at me walking backwards in front of me. I don't see who it is at first because I am looking towards the group Collin asked me to check out. When I was forced to turn and look straight so I would not run into this person, a column, barstool or some other random object in Red Star, my eyes focus on Chris N! My very bestest (guy) friend from school. I say (guy) because we used to differentiate that way. He is my Forest in the Forest/ Jenny combo or Peas to Peas/ Carrots combo. I have not seen him in a little over a year. I hug his neck boa constrictor like for a long second, an enormous smile on my face, I tell him how absolutely wonderful it is to see him. He and his wife are Executive Chefs and have a baby. Their time away from home is VERY limited other than the respective kitchens they call home away from home. I never get to see him unless I go to his restaurant for dinner (not too often). I asked for him while out for a business dinner on a Friday a while back, turns out he is off on Fridays (wtf?)! We spent a few minutes catching up, asking about mutual friends, parents (his are in poor health and I am sad for him), looking a baby pictures (his), and laughing. I was very happy to introduce him to Chris. The few times Chris and I have been to his restaurant, we have not seen him. My Chris has heard about Chris N. for a long time so I am sure it was nice to put a face with the name. The memories are flooding my mind and this could turn out to be the longest post ever, I must refrain. I love that boy!!! Reasons why are too many to count or share, but here are a few:
His laugh, it is contagious
He is always smiling
He forced me to listen to Metallica on the way to school (thanks for the rides btw)
We can always pick up where left off
He stayed up with me until the sun came up the night of my LSU graduation party talking as if it would be the end of our youthful friendship (I will never forget that night and the talks that night - it was like wake up! we are in the real world now! but wait, what is the real world? I don't want to go there!!!!)
His relationship with his parents is beautiful and the way he cares for them and did when we were younger.
Doing physics homework, me trying to tutor so he would graduate. ummmm, why me? LOL.
Watching movies together, he is the biggest movie fan and has the largest collection I have ever seen.
I must stop now. Seriously could turn into a silly long post. I think you all get the picture. He is very special to me and it was so great to see him.

Side note to Collin: Sorry if I was rude, I had not seen Chris N in a while and was over-joyed and relishing every moment of it while he was there. I agree with Chris statement to you last night. I walk past that house while walking the lakes and think wtf?

London Calling

Last night was Prom at Red Star. How could I have forgotten this? I am ill-prepared and costumeless. I thought about calling Natalie for options but knew she would be tempted to come and had an early Saturday event to attend, so didn't bother. I decide to proceed from watching basketball game with Boyd on to Red Star sans costume. Theme: London Calling.
Me with Randall

PS - there is a prom picture of Chris and I, but I will have to get his permission to post. He is making a silly face.

Joel and Lacy, ummmmm???????

Just kidding, ya'll are cute together!

Au revoir Chuck P!

My happy hour buddy from Red Star, Chuck P., is moving to NOLA. So sad. Chuck has given me hours of amazing and insightful conversation. The stories are always interesting (my favorite is the D-Day Museum story, that was awesome!!!). Chuck is a lover of history and shares a piece most days I see him. He often tells me hello or goodbye in French. He must leave Red Star when it gets too loud. He always has a smile. He has a the same dislike for a certain person as I (the only one in this world - I could use the "H" word here, but this is my pleasant post about Chuck). He drinks Miller High Life draft. He is friendly with everyone. He is one of the greatest story tellers I have known (did I already mention that one?)!

Chuck,
While I will miss you and all of the stories and great conversation, I know you are moving to a city rich in all things you love. Enjoy it and write a book!

à bientôt

PS - The Boydster and I will come visit!

Little Serio Came to Town

Lauren knocked on my door apparently while I was google chatting with a friend and I never heard it. Phone rings and it is Chris.
Chris: We have a surprise visitor. Lauren is staying with us tonight.
Me: Oh goodness.
Chris: See you when I get off.
I text Lauren to say sorry for not hearing her knock. She arrives back at my place in 10 minutes. Yikes! I am in PJs but she never comes to town and I am obligated to show her a good time. Right? Quickly change back into work clothes and head out the door with Lauren and we are destined for Red Star. Introductions are made to the bar staff, none needed because they look so much alike and we drink. Tonight was my night off from going out, but whatever, Lauren Serio came to town! Love her! Photos for the blog world and those who hate when people post pictures in their blog...

PS - I love the way my boyfriend loves his sister. It is so beautiful!

FY: Wearing my blue flower necklace referenced in "favorite things" post. Chris gave it to me on a date very early in our relationship and I think it is lovely!

The Grass is Always Greener

I have never met a stranger! Chris thinks this is a dangerous characteristic at times, I don't. Last night while at the bar at Red Star, talking with Jeff and Chuck P. (thanks for the photo - will be blog post soon), two guys approach the bar, order drinks, and plant themselves to my left. They smelled like girls, had accents and were very eager to talk to someone. One of the guys leans in to ask me why they were given orange wristbands at the door and no one else is wearing one. I have no answer so defer to Jeff (manager). He explains the timing process and that they came into the bar right as the cover charge began.
Side Note - Largely Ironic Karaoke is every Wednesday at Red Star and cover is usually starts at 10:00. Recently they are charging cover starting at 8:00 and there is complimentary Miller High Life from 8:00-10:00!
Back to the story. While one of the guys is talking with Jeff about cover charge, the other begins to roll a cigarette! I found this somewhat fascinating. Jeff, Randall and I do a shot of coffee vodka and my new foreign friends are interested in what we are drinking. I explain. They order shots. Kelly (bartender) returns with three shots and one comes my way. We toast to their visit to America and damn Americans. Now I ask where they are from...Holland says Nick. James interjects: Where the grass is always greener and winks. Now, I am no idiot and was fully aware of the reference he was making but everyone around me felt the need to offer up an explanation. I did think the expression was funny and continued to use it throughout the night. My two new friends are Nick (in navy) and James (in sweater cardigan). They are in BR coaching a professional tennis tournament at Lamar Dixon (I googled and found no such tournament). I spent the better part of my time trying to talk James into singing The Sweater song by Weezer. He didn't comply.

Trivia, not so much

I needed to hook up with a few people last night to deliver necklaces they had ordered from Julie. Holly and I met at Red Star for a cocktail and catch-up. We were having beers and I decide to order us a shot of coffee vodka (my new favorite thing). I drank mine and in typical Holly style she smelled it, took a tiny taste, and said she was going to save it until after "she had a few more drinks". I was there before her and one beer ahead. 15 minutes pass, I go to the restroom, come out and shot is gone! Guilty look on her face, I ask where the shot is. "I took it"! Knowing this is bullshit, I look to Randall (bartender) for confirmation. Randall, also with guilty look and grin, "She took the shot". Now I know they collaborated while I was away. Either shot went into trash or Randall did it for her. Tricky people! Collin and Chris met us when they finished with work. Collin had been reprimanded outside of Red Star on his way in for honking his car horn (with car alarm) while the movie crew (see AZ post from Friday night) outside of bar was "rolling". Once we got over that, we drank a couple of beers and visited. Once Holly found out it was trivia night with Monkey Mike at Champps, we had a destination. The girl loves her some games. I mentioned that Red Star had a collection of board games we could play, but her heart was set on Trivia. Of we go to Champps for trivia with a pit stop by my place for the camera for party pics. We arrive early so we can eat before trivia. Problem = we thought trivia started at 9:00 so we arrive at 8:00. Turns out trivia doesn't start until 10:30ish! Geez, that is late for us old folks. While thumbing through menu and discussing dinner options, the subject of chicken comes up. Now, Chris is not a fan of chicken, he will eat it but would rather seafood or red meat. Holly, who works with chickens (further explination probably to come from Holly Bof in a comment on this post) contributes the following to the chicken discussion:
Chris about photo of chicken dish (something on a stick) on menu while making a disgusted look on his face: Is that chicken?
Me: Yes
Chris: That looks nasty!
Me to Holly: Chris is not a fan of chicken.
Holly: I could go the rest of my life without eating chicken.
Chris: Me too!
Holly: I am a beef girl!
I don't know if this is one of those moments in conversation where it would be said "guess you had to be there" but it was quite funny and caused a cackle from Holly Bof and Chris thought it was pretty funny too. The conversation continued into t-shirts being made etc...
Trivia did not go so well. Get Along Gang (our team name) got two of the first five questions right. We were the only team of nine or ten to get one question wrong...it was something about Drew Carey Show. Who watches that? Better luck next time I suppose. We left halfway through round one.

Per Cousin Will's Request....

Sunday Funday pictures.

ummmm, this one may need some explaining. Will bought some knitted booties for $3 and thinks they are the greatest thing ever! Wore them out later that night and was moon walking in them...

Commitment

After working until 6:00 am and waking at 7:30, I am exhausted! While fully committed to my work-out schedule at a four time weekly minimum, today may be somewhat difficult. I was unable to go yesterday due to the brutal work schedule. So my dilemma is if I don't go today then too many workouts will be crammed into the later part of the week. I think I should go today, even if it is a light workout. Decision made, I will go today unless I get called to work in a store tonight thanks to our favorite manager deciding today would be the best day to resign. Geez! I am really tired.

I sure hope my yellow leg warmers are clean!

Saturday

Natalie had some peeps over for backyard happy hour. Technically is it happy hour on saturday? ummm? I took advantage of the fact that it is spring AND I was going to a garden party to wear seersucker and lacoste polo (Collin later asked if i was right off the court...ha ha Collin). Thanks Nat for having everyone over. It was a lovely time! I especially enjoyed Aquaman. It seemed as if most of the group was going to head to the Happy Note after, but that is a little too far from downtown home base so I chose to meet Collin at Avoyelles. He did not share that he was going to have to leave me there alone to shoot prom pictures across the street! While it was a nice excuse for me to visit with Erik, Charley Jo and Dexter, they were all working, I did manage to catch up with a friend on the phone for some of Collin's absence. Collin returned to sport a picture of himself with a half dozen high school prom girls with his collar up and looking totally pimp. Maybe I will get a copy to share with my blog world. While I am sure it would have been quite nice to stay for DJ Cheez, we left for a calmer, quieter Red Star. We stayed for only one beer. I was tired and need to rest up for a big Sunday - Sunday in the Park AND Earth Day celebration!
Boyd, looking nice but what the heck are you laughing at? My granny sweater?
Oh and Nat, AZ did not make another appearance at Red Star. Darn!

Coming Soon to A Blog Near You!

For Last Night's Escapades, I defer to my fellow blogger.....

I may have additional notes in a bit!
Additional notes:
1. Natalie's blog did not express her excitement quite right. She was attempting to hurdle the back of the booth we were in to get to AZ!
2. Dan and Chris had entirely too many shots.
3. The night started with frozen Pina Coladas (three please!) where we all were imagining we were at the beach. Night was destined for greatness.
4. My white granny sweater was pimped out. Everyone had it on at some point other than me.

Mood Changers...

No matter how crappy your day or mood, there are subtle things in life that snap you into a really good place. I will share mine from this morning...
1. A BEAUTIFUL day!
2. A walk to the grocery for a cup of coffee.
3. Farmer's Market.
4. Meeting a good friend and her dog there.
5. Seeing friend holding fresh flowers purchased at market.
6. Walk home and realizing how groovy my neighborhood is for the millionth time. Someone left some vinyls on the sidewalk for anyone's pleasure or pick-up.

7. A drive down River Road
8. Music, oh music. Today's selections. Enjoy.

Grocery Gab

So I woke up a little late this morning (6:45 - still early to most of the world, but late to me)and was a little scattered because my routine was off a bit. In a rush, I start off at the grocery in my hood to pick up a couple of things before running some errands for work. The two parking places in front of the store are filled with the likes of some state worker's vehicle, so I am forced to park on the side of the store (on 7th which is one way and will force me to take three more blocks to get back on track, but whatever). In a rush, I hurry towards the store, round the corner to hear "hey you!"...some of you know...some of you don't, but this can only mean Boyd. Red-eyed and hazy looking (see photo taken of us last night; Boyd and I were lucky enough to see the three hottest girls in BR(according to Boyd) all within five minutes!!!) he is dumping his two quarters into the newspaper machine (a daily Boyd routine, which he has too many to get into in this short blog post). He too is going into the store. We chat for a sec while he tells me the events of last night as if I were not there, I remind him I was with him, we chat more...he leaves me to grab himself a fountain soda (breakfast of champs, Boyd) and I get in line to checkout.

Backgournd Info: The grocery has a small kitchen and daily prepare biscuits, which sell out daily by about 10:00AM.

The lady in front of me bought an assortment of breakfast biscuit sandwiches...I think like 25. Her bill was almost $40, for breakfast! Anyway, Mike (store owner) and biscuit lady have this exchange:
M: You know you can call a day in advance with large orders and we can have it ready for you.
BL: We were unsure of breakfast until about 10 minutes ago.
M: Yea, but you can call in advance the day before with large orders.
BL: OK, we will know for next time. Chances are these will always be last minute decisions.
M: Well breakfast shouldn't be a decision.
Translation - You just wiped me out, bitch!

Meanwhile, there is a child (solo) behind me in line staring at the lady taking all of the biscuits. She is looking worried. There are now two left in the case.

BL to me and child: Are you here for breakfast too?
Me: No
Child: Yes, for my mom and dad (she is holding a fountain soda - what is up with that? and quart of milk)

Child to Me: What are you here for? (I am holding nothing but a purse and keys)
Me to Child with confessing look about my face: Cigarettes
Child: Oh
Child: Those are gross
Me: I know
Child: Then why are you getting them?
Me: They are for someone else
Child: Sure they are

BL leaves and is now my turn to check out. Mike and I make small talk about the weather. I say I am trying to beat the rain. Mike tells of the weather forcasters never "getting it right" with their predictions

Child Interjects: Actually they are right most of the time!
Mike: Well not in my world.

Mike: Jen, your hair looks very nice today. Did you "fix" it?
Me: umm, no.

(WTF??? I know I am not great with the whole hair thing or what to do with it, but I think he was trying to say it normally looks like crap)

On the way out of the store, I hear behind me...
Mike: Have a nice day Jen
Child: Bye Lady
Boyd: See ya Jen

What shall today bring when it starts that way?

Museum & Martinis?

I am planning a girl's night for one night next week. I have several passes to the LSU Museum of Art for the "Adventures in Art" exhibit showing right now (Thanks Chelsea!). My thought was to meet at Wine Loft early (6ish) for glass of wine, walk over to Museum to see exhibit, then end the night with rooftop martinis and sushi at Tsunami. I think Wednesday or Thursday would be best. Holly Bof and I may be having dinner with Julie on Wednesday next week but I should know for sure today. Thoughts? What the hell am I saying, most of you are reading and have NO intentions of commenting...so, send an email or text!

"Live After Five" March 28th

Live After Five pics from 3.28.08. It looks like we are in white trash land!

My hair looks like at rats nest. Nat and Green Bean, you both look cute. Where is Dan. I thought he was in the picture as well???

Vegas will never be the same...

Bidding farewell to the Green Bean. I am having a hard time picturing Green Bean in Vegas; I don't know why?!? Maybe because she has this innocence about her, maybe it's the Jonesville going to Vegas thing, maybe it's the "Bean, like a Green Bean" thing...hmmm. Now as she travels to the City O' Sin, lets hope she comes back with tons of cash and non-corrupted.

Additionally - Conversations with a Green Bean:

I meant to blog this last week and totally forgot! Green Bean picked me up to go out for a few drinks. As soon as we are in the car, it starts storming! Conversation as follows
Me: Green Bean, do you have an umbrella?
GB: No, but I have a bread maker.

This morning through gmail chat -
GB: I did not sleep well
Me: Why GB?
GB: I kept dreaming about sharks!
Me: Did you watch Jaws last night?
GB: Nope, I dream about sharks once a week.

You crack me up!!!

I almost forgot to post Sunday Funday pics!

Me and Alexa after her photo shoot

Avery and Leo

This is the PG version. We had tots and strollers and toys around this week! What a change for this group.

PS - I just noticed that Sheridan is in the background holding the Guiness that will moments later end up on her white sundress.

JUNO!

Finally it comes out on video today! I have been dying to see this movie. When it was out in theaters, I almost overcame my fear/ hatred of the movie theater enough to go see it. Ultimately, I chose to wait and see it on video. Hopefully Monkey Mike will still have a copy when I make it to Blockbuster to get it. I may actually purchase this one.

PS - Because I had to work so terribly late last night, Chris RENTED Juno for me. I am sure I will eventually purchase. Nat, we will hook up today. I would have come by after work yesterday, but I left the office too late. That meeting was 5 1/2 hours long!

AND, I did not get a chance to watch it either.

Kickball 2006

So, cleaning is a good thing...

Yesterday while "cleaning" for the five or so minutes I did, I stumbled across a ton of picture CDs. In the mix of prize finds was the kickball CD from 2006! I thought it was last year's but when looking at the length of mine and Erik's hair, this must be 2006!

Sharing now since I did not blog then...(I can't wait for this year! Last Sunday in July and first Sunday in August...mark you calendars.)

Me with Lauren H!

Italia!

Erik, we look 10 years younger!

No clue...

Donny, the wise wonder.

ha!

Last Night

Cousin Will...what happened to our pic from the patio? Its not on my camera! Shoot. Well, there are others to share. Thank you so much Mike for the loaner aluminum foil necktie. It made my night complete...

Erik Adams...love you

Raaaaandal, hopefully you are reading and maybe posting a comment? Thanks for the countless "thought of the day" on the chalkboard at red star

Me with my tie, thanks again Mike!

Mike...

Bee Boy. Ummmm, what does that costume have to do with a space theme?

Me with the Green Bean
